A device thrown through the window of an elderly couple in Derry has been confirmed to have been a viable pipe bomb that police say “could have badly injured or even killed’ someone.

A security alert got underway in the Limewood Street area of Derry at about 7.30pm on Monday and cordons were put in place while Army Technical Officers attended the scene.

Local politicians condemned what was branded a “shocking and distressing attack” on the couple’s home, with the device believed to have exploded.

On Tuesday morning, the PSNI confirmed the alert had ended.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Mark Gingell said: “The object, which has been declared as a viable suspected pipe bomb, has been removed and taken away for further forensic examination.

“It is believed that this device was put through the window of the house and has exploded. This has caused damage to the property, but could have led to the occupants being badly injured or even killed.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information, or relevant video footage captured in the area, to contact detectives at Strand Road on 101.

Speaking on Monday evening, SDLP MP for Foyle Colum Eastwood said there was “no excuse” for the attack.

“An elderly couple have had a device thrown through their window in what must have been a shocking and distressing attack on their home,” he said.

“There is no excuse for it. The people responsible have caused an immense amount of disruption for this family and the local community.

“If anyone has information about this attack I would encourage them to bring it forward to the police.”

Sinn Féin councillor for Derry City and Strabane District Council Sandra Duffy said the incident was “totally wrong”.

“There is no place or excuse for this type of activity,” she said.

“I would urge anyone with information on this incident to bring it forward to the PSNI.”
