Portland sees mostly sunny skies Tuesday after a chilly morning; high 59

Fall weather ricochets from a rainy Monday to a mostly sunny Tuesday with morning temps hovering in the low 40s in Portland.

The National Weather Service says surface high pressure is building into the region Tuesday and will bring light northerly winds to the metro area. Expect some windy conditions in the Columbia River Gorge and the eastern part of Multnomah County. The high will reach about 59 degrees.

Wednesday will start with mostly cloudy skies that gradually clear to mostly sunny. A low pressure system moving inland through Washington and Oregon brings a chance of rain showers mainly to the coast and the higher mountains. But valley locations could see up to a 15% chance of a shower. The high will cool to about 57 degrees.

Evening skies will clear, and cold air moves in behind the low that tracks eastward out of the state. The weather service says widespread frost and fog may develop overnight and into Thursday morning.

Chances of frost will really depend on where you are. It’s unlikely the core of Portland or Vancouver’s metro areas will see frost, but outlying areas are likely to have some slick roads early Thursday.

Once any fog clears off, Portland will have mostly sunny skies Thursday, and a high of about 57 degrees.

Frost and fog are possible again Friday morning, but much less likely Saturday morning as cloud cover should keep temperatures warmer.

Portland should see partly sunny skies Friday and temperature warming to about 62 degrees.

Extended forecasts show multiple wet systems moving through the Pacific Northwest over the weekend. The Cascades are likely to see the return of snow, but we’re too far out from the weekend to predict the snow levels.
