The radio DJ and podcaster (47), from Kilcorney in Cork, is departing the station after a quarter century of service.
“Hello all! After 25 life changing, craic having, friend finding and above all, radio making years, my time with Today FM is coming to an end,” he said on X.
Smith paid a shout out “to the countless colleagues that endured and inspired me” saying they were, are and will forever be “the heart and soul of it all”.
“Most of all I want to thank the listeners,” said Smith, who presents Today FM Rocks With Ed Smith.
He described his work at the station as “the greatest job in the world” adding that to have had that lucky an honour is “a joy that will fill my heart forever”.
“You were a gas and glorious crew and thank you again for letting me into your ears over all the years.
“I loved every mad and magnificent minute of it. Much love forever,” he wrote.
Smith suffered a heart attack in 2019 after falling ill after attending Electric Picnic. He welcomed his second child, his son Micheál, into the world, less than two years later.
“I don’t want to harp on about the heart attack, but it did turn my life around in a positive way. I got healthier and there was a lot of maturing, a lot of growing up and a bit of perspective on who I was and where I was going. And look at me now,” he told the Sunday World in 2021.
Colleagues and friends across the radio and podcasting industry have paid tribute to Smith following the announcement of his departure from Today FM.
Music podcaster Dave Hanratty said getting to co-anchor a nu metal hour on the radio with Smith was a “literal teenage dream come true”.
“Others will say your legacy will be greater than this, but I think we both know the magic that was captured that night. Bravo on an incredible run and best of luck in the next chapter, sir,” he wrote on X.
Today FM’s Sunday Business Show host Conall Ó Móráin said: “One of the very good guys. Lovely to have worked with you.”
While Newstalk host Tom Dunne, formerly with Today FM, said “sorry to hear Ed” and Dublin DJ Kelly-Anne Byrne wrote: “One of the soundest people in the industry, best of luck with everything Ed.”
