Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know

Quick Links

Horror maven Robert Eggers’ next film will see him take on the 1920s silent classic, Nosferatu, and there are already a ton of details about the 2024 vampire remake. Originally released in 1922, Nosferatu was one of the foundational horror films of the silent era, and the first adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, unofficially speaking. The ghoulish image of Count Orlok is still haunting over 100 years later, and Nosferatu continues to capture the imaginations of moviegoers despite being a century old.

Eggers’ adaptation isn’t the first time a modern filmmaker has put their stamp on Nosferatu, and 1979’s Nosferatu the Vampyre somehow made the eponymous villain even creepier. Rober Eggers’ horror films have set a new standard for chills in the 2010s and 2020s, and he has positioned himself as the tastemaker of modern chillers with high-concept movies like The Witch and The Lighthouse. 2024’s Nosferatu is shaping up to be yet another brilliant take from Eggers, and details about the movie’s cast, release date, and story have already been revealed.

As anticipation continues to mount for the next Robert Eggers horror opus, Nosferatu has set a release date. It was revealed in late 2023 that the ghoulish vampire will arrive in cinemas at Christmas 2024, offering the perfect counter-programming to other holiday movies. Of the release date, Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski cheekily said “The audacious filmmaking of Robert Eggers is always a gift for fans, and we can promise that his Nosferatu is planning quite the Christmas feast.

premiered on March 4, 1922.

Nosferatu Cast

Lily-Rose Depp Leads A Star-Studded Ensemble

Like most Robert Eggers movies, the cast of Nosferatu is a star-studded affair with several familiar collaborators returning to new roles. Lily-Rose Depp will lead the cast as Ellen Hutter, a young woman who unwillingly becomes the object of Count Orlok’s devious attention. She’s joined by Willem Dafoe as the crazed vampire hunter Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, and Dafoe had previously worked with Eggers on The Lighthouse.

Perhaps most important of all, Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd continues his horror hot streak as he assumes the role of the titular vampire, Count Orlok. SkarsgÃ¥rd is perhaps best known for his turn as Pennywise in the modern adaptations of Stephen King’s IT, and he has a knack for transforming himself into various ghouls and monsters with shocking ease. Nicholas Hoult also stars as Thomas Hutter, a man caught between Ellen and the vampiric designs of Count Orlok.

Nosferatu Story

A Tale Of Gothic Horror Is In Store

Count Orlok (Max Schreck) seemingly looks at the camera in the 1922 silent film Nosferatu.

The plot details surrounding Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu are somewhat thin, but it’s presumably going to be a send-up to the original story of the 1922 film. Itself a close approximation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel, the story follows a young woman (in this case Depp’s Ellen) as she is stalked by an ancient vampire who travels from his shadowy land to feast upon the heart of Western Europe. What’s perhaps most important is the style of the film, and Egger’s deft camera is uniquely suited to adapt F.W. Murnau’s original, German Expressionist, lens.

In anticipation of the film’s Christmas release, a full trailer for Nosferatu has been dropped which is just as terrifying as any feature film. Through a series of establishing shots, the teaser sets up the gothic atmosphere, and introduces Ellen Hutter (Depp) as a young woman caught in the spell of some mysterious force. She seeks the help of the Van Helsing-like Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz (Dafoe) who is on the hunt for the deadly entity. Looming over everything is Count Orlok (SkarsgÃ¥rd) himself, who is only seen in shadow, but promises to be a modern cinematic nightmare.

Following in the footsteps of the first trailer, a second trailer was dropped in September that further hypes up Nosferatu. The trailer is framed by a story told by Depp’s Ellen, who recounts a horrifying nightmare, before showing various scenes of terror as the vampire’s presence invades the town. Finally, the trailer reveals the face-to-face meeting between the vampire Orlok and Ellen as he visits her in her bedroom.
