Shannon McCann Randalstown: Man arrested after death of woman in Co Antrim

Shannon McCann, who was from Main Street in Randalstown, was found dead on Saturday after it was reported to police who attended the scene.

Police investigated her death and have subsequently arrested a 26-year-old man.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of supplying class A and class C drugs, preventing a lawful burial and perverting the course of justice.

He remained in police custody on Monday night.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said a post mortem has taken place and police are now awaiting the result of toxicology tests.

Detective Inspector Lenaghan said: “Our enquiries into this tragic death are ongoing and I would ask anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the Main Street area of Randalstown between Wednesday the 9th and the evening of Saturday the 12th of October, to contact detectives in Antrim on 101.”

A death notice on the Funeral Times website said Ms McCann was the beloved mother of Phoenix, the dearly beloved daughter of Eamonn and Michelle and the much loved sister of Annabelle, Sam, Ella and Ava.

Her funeral will take place on Thursday at Bairds Funeral Home in Antrim with a service afterwards at Sixmile Cemetery.

“Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her father, mother, brother, sisters and entire family circle,” the post added. Donations are to be made to Mid Antrim Animal Sanctuary

South Antrim MLA John Blair said Ms McCann’s death would leave the “community stunned” and appealed for those with information to come forward to police.

“My heart goes out to this young woman’s friends and family, and I know the impact her death will have on the Randalstown community which has been stunned by this news,” the Alliance MLA said. Ulster Unionist councillor Stewart Wilson said while he didn’t know Ms McCann personally “his thoughts go out to her loved ones”.

“I didn’t know Shannon, but this death is very sad, and I would reiterate calls from the police for anyone who may have information or seen something between last Wednesday and Saturday to please come forward.”

North Antrim MP Robin Swann also shared a call for information on social media writing: “In light of Saturday’s awful news of a death at Randalstown town centre, I would urge anybody who may have any information to contact the PSNI.”
