Keanu Reeves’ Shadow is shaping up to be the “big bad” of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and while the villain is sure to put up a fight, it’s pretty likely that Sonic and his friends will manage to take him down in the end. And there are only so many times they can fight against Robotnik, so it turns out that Sonic the Hedgehog’s main problem moving forward may be running out of villains. Robotnik appears in the vast majority of video games, but as excellent as Jim Carrey is, it would be repetitive to do the same in the movies.
Therefore, the franchise will need another major villain after Shadow is presumably defeated at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. There are countless places the writers could search for these figures.
