Sonic The Hedgehog 3’s Missing Characters Means The $707 Million Video Game Movie Franchise Won’t End Anytime Soon

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 promises to be even bigger and better than its two predecessors, continuing this beloved video game adaptation series with new characters and locations. Much like the previous film, Jeff Fowler’s third installment will expand the Sonic world even further by delving deeper into the lore of the video games, introducing plenty of familiar faces as Sonic’s journey continues. Most notably, Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s cast will include Keanu Reeves as Shadow, the fan-favorite anti-hero from the original games.

Not only have the previous two Sonic films been solid box office successes, but from everything that’s currently known about Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the upcoming installment will continue the series’ trend of introducing new aspects from the video games’ extensive lore and history. This means there are always going to be new aspects to weave into the movies, and judging by the number of characters that are still missing, the Sonic films aren’t running out any time soon.

Sonic 3 Is Still Missing A Lot Of Sonic The Hedgehog Characters

There Are Plenty Of Characters Left For Future Sequels

Sonic The Hedgehog 3’s Missing Characters Means The 7 Million Video Game Movie Franchise Won’t End Anytime Soon

Even though the Sonic the Hedgehog movies have done a great job of incorporating the franchise’s most popular characters, there are still many figures from the video games that haven’t been adapted for the screen yet. The most obvious omission is Amy Rose, the hotheaded hedgehog whose crush on Sonic is a fun plot point in most of the newer games. Alongside Amy are characters like Cream and Rouge, whose roles are smaller but their personalities are just as entertaining.

The fact that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hasn’t officially announced any of these characters yet means that plans are likely in place for their introduction in later sequels if they ever get made. Of course, it’s also possible that characters like Amy are in Sonic 3 and their appearances are being kept secret from audiences until the release. After all, Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s Shadow is very powerful and the team could require a helping hand to defeat him.

Sonic The Hedgehog’s Lore Gives The Live-Action Franchise Many Possibilities

The Video Games Are Filled With Possibilities

Ultimately, the Sonic movies will never run out of source material to adapt. The lore of Sonic the Hedgehog is immense, with each new video game introducing new characters, new locations, and new mechanics that have expanded the universe greatly. There’s no shortage of stories that the movies could draw inspiration from either, with great narratives to be found in both comic books and television series. The video games are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Sonic lore.

Mephiles the Dark, Black Doom, and Metal Sonic are all brilliant anti-heroes that could easily make the transition to the screen.

The fact that there’s so much available backstory in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe is a great sign for the movies: it means there’s always going to be new characters and ideas that can make their way onto the screen. The new characters in Sonic 3 are undeniably the most exciting part of the project, so if the franchise can keep bringing in new actors with every passing sequel, it shouldn’t be too difficult to maintain some interest in the Sonic movies. The stories also write themselves thanks to all the adventures that have been explored in other media before now.

What Could The Story Of Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Be After Sonic 3’s Shadow?

Several Games And Comics Could Serve As Inspiration

Keanu Reeves’ Shadow is shaping up to be the “big bad” of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and while the villain is sure to put up a fight, it’s pretty likely that Sonic and his friends will manage to take him down in the end. And there are only so many times they can fight against Robotnik, so it turns out that Sonic the Hedgehog’s main problem moving forward may be running out of villains. Robotnik appears in the vast majority of video games, but as excellent as Jim Carrey is, it would be repetitive to do the same in the movies.

Therefore, the franchise will need another major villain after Shadow is presumably defeated at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. There are countless places the writers could search for these figures. Mephiles the Dark, Black Doom, and Metal Sonic are all brilliant anti-heroes that could easily make the transition to the screen; even games outside of the main series like Sonic Unleashed have endless potential for fun additions to the movies.
