Spirit Halloween strikes back at ‘SNL’ over season premiere sketch

Spirit Halloween strikes back at ‘SNL’ over season premiere sketch

Spirit Halloween raised its pitchforks at “Saturday Night Live,” which aired a sketch mocking the costume store during Saturday’s Season 50 premiere.

America’s largest Halloween retailer reposted a video of the skit on X with the caption, “We are great at raising things back from the dead @nbcsnl.” A picture of a fake costume labeled “Irrelevant 50-year-old TV Show” designed like the garb sold in their stores was also featured in the post. The costume was described as including “dated references,” “unknown cast members” and “shrinking raises” — three clear jabs at “SNL.”

X users haunted the comments with remarks like, “This is way funnier than their video,” and “Looks like @nbcsnl needs to hire the social media team of @SpiritHalloween to be writers.”

But some die-hard “SNL” fans snuck in to defend the show as well. One X user commented, “SNL rules. Always has, always will,” while another wrote, “The skit was hilarious though.”

The sketch in question featured Heidi Gardner, Chloe Fineman and Michael Longfellow performing as Spirit Halloween employees in a fake commercial.

They referenced the store’s penchant for setting up shop in vacant retail spots, remarking, “We don’t see a dead-end town. We don’t see an abandoned Kmart. We see a spirit, a Spirit Halloween.”

Longfellow jokingly added, “Thanks to us, what used to be condemned Auto Zone where a murder happened, is again a thriving business, where a murder happened.”

The group also pokes fun at stereotypes about the costume store’s seemingly eclectic gaggle of employees, joking that the company hires “some of the hardest-hit perverts.”

And to close the spirited roast,SNL” joked: “Spirit Halloween. When you need us, we’re here. For six weeks. Because on November 1, we’re gone. And all this junk will be in the dumpster.”

“Saturday Night Live” airs on NBC on Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET. Representatives for the show did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Watch the full sketch below.
