Teen killed in road crash remembered as ‘utterly unique’ as hundreds gather for funeral

Harry was remembered as “utterly unique” and “kind and loving”

The collision involving a tractor and a car, happened on the N83 at Lavallyroe, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo last Friday night.

The funeral mass of Harry, from Cloonfad, Co Roscommon took place at his local St Patrick’s Church, and follows the funeral of James Daniels (13) on Tuesday.

Harry’s brothers Gerard, Daniel and Shane each paid tribute to the boy who lived and loved fiercely.

Harry’s younger brother Dermot remains in a serious condition in hospital following injuries he sustained in the accident that claimed the life of his brother and best friend James Daniels.

Harry Fagan (left) and James Daniels were killed after the car in which they were travelling was involved in a collision last Friday

Harry’s brother Shane said his family’s “hearts are shattered.”

“There are words that can ease the pain we feel at losing him and no amount of time will fill the void left behind by his absence.

“Harry wasn’t just another face in this world he was bright, fierce and an unstoppable wild force.

“His life ended too soon but in the time he head he filled every corner of it with love, laughter and the kind, wild energy that could never be contained.

“I always tried to get Harry to take the usual route in life like school and sport but after a couple of years trying I realised Harry wouldn’t confirm to societal pressures.

“Harry lived by his own rules. He done what made him happy.

“After spending a couple of weeks with him in July for Gerard’s wedding I saw he had found his passions and was so happy with life and so comfortable in himself.

“I was and remain so proud of him and the man he became.”

The Fagan brothers recalled Harry’s love of buying and selling cars, his hard work ethic, his love of his family and deep sense of joy, mischief and fun.

Daniel Fagan remembered his brother as “always larger than life.”

“From the very beginning there was something special about him.

“He didn’t just exist he lived. He threw himself into everything he did from farming, to plastering in recent times.

“It was his love for cars that truly captured his heart.

“Beyond the cars and the hard work what really defined Harry was the love he had for his family and his girlfriend Kate.

“Harry had many great loves but none compared for the love he had for Kate.

“In the short time they had together they were so deeply connected and understanding of each other’s ways it felt almost magical.

“Kate will forever hold a special place in our hearts and thank you Kate for loving Harry all that you did.

“Harry and his nanny Kathleen shared an incredible special bond.

“In her eyes Harry could do no wrong. She was his staunch ally in everything.

“When her confidence in driving decreased she trusted Harry like nobody else.

“She let him drive her along the back roads to Ballyhaunis to get an ice-cream.

“Their relationship was built on love and trust and an unbreakable connection that will be forever cherished.

“But Harry wasn’t just about love he was all about laughter.

“He teased dad relentlessly in the evenings causing chaos and was always was in some kind of scrap with his brothers by nightfall.

“He was a wild, unpredictable and utterly unique. There is no one else in the world that could make you laugh like Harry could.”

Shane Fagan said his brother Harry “had his quirks”.

“He hated Ribena but loved chocolate digestives.

“He didn’t have time for school or Mondays. He lived life his own way.

“When it came to money Harry was a cash only man.

“In a world of online banking and digital payments Harry stuck to what he knew. He wasn’t going to change for anyone and we loved him for that.

“He was the daftest, wildest most stubborn brother but also the most fiercely loved.

“There wasn’t a moment when Harry wasn’t making us smile or shake our heads in disbelief at his antics.

“His life was a whirlwind of mischief, love and pure joy.

“And now as we stand here hearts heavy with grief we find ourselves wishing for just one more of those moments.

“Just one more laugh, one more joke one more chance to see him charging through life without hesitation.

“That’s the hardest part, Harry is gone and there is nothing we can do to bring him back.

“Music and singing is a huge part of this family. Dad is well known for singing the Green Fields of France.

“While I was walking this morning I sadly realised our Harry is the one who will be forever 19.

“The world feels quieter without him and our family will never be the same.

“Even in this darkness we will carry him with us in every laugh, every memory and in every story Harry will live on.

“His wild spirit will remain in our hearts although he is not with us physically he will never truly leave us.

“Harry you are loved more than words can say and you will be missed more than we can ever express.

“Those who are remembered will never die. Harry Fagan forever 19.”
