The Indo Daily: How Australia’s most wanted man came a cropper in Dublin

One of Mick O’Dea’s sketches of Robert Trimbole’s court appearance

It all began on an autumn day in October 1984 in Dublin. Michael Pius Hanbury was driving in his rented car accompanied by his partner and one of his daughters.

Little did Hanbury and his family know that they were being followed by gardaí and had in fact been under surveillance for some time.

But when gardaí stopped their car, they didn’t know that it would cause an international media storm like nothing Ireland had experienced before.

The man they had apprehended would turn out to be one of Australia most wanted criminals.

Kevin Doyle is joined on The Indo Daily by Liam Collins, journalist with the Irish Independent, to unravel the tall tale of ‘Aussie Bob’ and his notorious criminal life.
