It’s 2024, and the world appears to have fallen in love again with the infamous German pop band Milli Vanilli, all thanks to their music heavily featuring in the true-crime Netflix hit series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

However, the story of Milli Vanilli’s rise and fall from stardom is itself one of the biggest scandals of the last century.

Desperate to escape poverty in search of fame and fortune, Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan seized on an opportunity they couldn’t refuse.

The German pop duo Milli Vanilli ruled the late 1980s, with their debut album selling over nine million copies and winning them countless awards.

As Pilatus would later explain during a press conference, the pair had, in their own words “made a pact with the devil”.

The devil in question was German record producer – and Boney M mastermind – Frank Farian. He took one look at Pilatus and Morvan and saw dollar signs.

And thus, Milli Vanilli was born. With a string of smash hits, international stardom quickly followed, as the dreams of the two young men came true.

There was just one problem. They were living the greatest lie in all of pop music.

Today on The Indo Daily, Dave Hanratty is joined by Irish independent journalist John Meagher to look at the mime-and-punishment scandal that was Milli Vanilli.
