The Sunday Independent’s Mark Tighe recently reported that a group of media “experts” hired by the government to advise on the awarding of €1.8m of taxpayers’ money from the Global Ireland Media Challenge Fund suggested there should be “more emphasis on the wider topic of climate change” and “the rise of populism” overseas.
A thumping €720,000 of this money went to RTÉ, which said it was used to expand coverage of foreign news. One can’t help wondering how much this clumsy attempt at meddling in the content of current affairs has informed thinking in the national broadcaster when deciding to commission a show like Heated (RTÉ One, Tuesday, 7pm).
