Why Wasn’t Victor’s Father In From’s Town With Their Family?

Spoilers are ahead for From season 3, episode 1, “Shatter.”In From season 3’s premiere, the sci-fi horror series introduces Henry Kavanaugh (Robert Joy), prompting many viewers to wonder why Victor’s father wasn’t with his family when they landed in the Township. In the first season of the show, Victor (Scott McCord) is introduced as a peculiar older resident of Colony House. Obsessed with canned peaches and making crayon drawings, Victor unnerves most of the Matthews family. Bit by bit, it becomes clear that Victor has lived in the Town the longest of anyone in From‘s cast of characters. Even worse, Victor spent many years completely on his own.

When Victor realizes Ethan Matthews (Simon Webster) can also see the Boy in White, the pair become fast friends. Throughout From‘s first two seasons, Victor reveals more information to Ethan and others about the Town’s history. Armed with his lunch box and his prophetic drawings, Victor knows more about the seemingly magical Faraway Trees and vast woods than anyone else. In From season 2’s cliffhanger ending, Victor helps Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) reach the show’s mysterious lighthouse — a portal that transports Tabitha back to the world outside the Township, which is where she meets Henry.

Why Wasn’t Victor’s Father In From’s Town With Their Family?

In From season 3, episode 1, “Shatter,” the show finally explores what’s happening in the world outside the seemingly inescapable Township and its haunting woods. The opening minutes confirm that From season 2’s lighthouse is a portal. Although viewers don’t see where, exactly, the portal dropped her, Tabitha wakes up in a hospital room in Camden, Maine. When the doctor informs Tabitha that the police are on their way to learn more about what happened to her, she grabs her things, including Victor’s lunch box, and sneaks out of the facility. In town, she sees the Boy in White again.

While From‘s mysterious Boy in White, who pushed Tabitha through the lighthouse’s window-portal, doesn’t provide any answers, a chance encounter with a priest prompts Tabitha to open Victor’s lunch box. Inside, she finds the items Victor packed her, as well as a return label Victor added to the box as a child. Armed with the address of Victor’s childhood home, Tabitha searches Camden for the house. Soon enough, Tabitha’s From season 3 location becomes immensely important: Victor’s father, Henry, still lives in the house. At first, Henry dismisses Tabitha — but then he recognizes his late son’s lunch box.

From Season 2 Fills In More Of Victor’s Backstory

Although the first episode of From season 3 ends before Tabitha really has the chance to speak with Henry, earlier seasons of the show delve into Victor’s backstory. In season 2, viewers learn that a young Victor (Eli Arsenault) arrived in Town in the 1970s or ’80s with his mother, Miranda (Sarah Booth), and his twin sister, Eloise (Ellie Cluett). Since Victor’s arrival predated the discovery of the creature-repelling talismans, Victor’s family and the rest of the townspeople were forced to wait out their nights in makeshift shelters, praying that From‘s monsters wouldn’t find them.

season 3 premiere on MGM+ on Sundays through November 24, 2024.

After another resident, Christopher (Thom Payne), is driven mad by From‘s mysterious symbol, Miranda tells her children to hide in a root cellar. Terrified, Victor obeys his mother’s wishes, but Eloise leaves the cellar to find their mom. In the morning, Victor emerges from his hiding place to discover that everyone else is dead. Traumatized by the slaughter and wracked by guilt, Victor repressed memories of his sister for quite some time. However, he continued to draw pictures of the things he saw — something his mother had encouraged. Moving forward, From hopefully fully explains why Henry wasn’t with his family.
