Locals in the New Oak estate expressed shock at the news this morning.

“It’s so sad. The news has put a dampener on the whole area,” a neighbour told the Irish Independent.

“I knew the young lad who died as I looked after him when he was a baby. He was a good, grand chap.

“He has two small kids so that makes it even more terribly sad. It’s just so shocking to open your curtains in the morning and see police cars all over the place and tape everywhere. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.”

Another neighbour said: “This is a very quiet community. Nothing really goes on out here. It’s a shock, it’s really shocking. The waste of a young life.

“I didn’t know the man very well but he seemed to be alright he would always say hello to you.”

In a statement a Garda spokesperson said: “The local Coroner has been notified and the services of the Garda Technical Bureau and State Pathologist have been requested. A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Carlow Garda Station. A Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has also been appointed to support the family.

“The scene has been preserved for a forensic and technical examination and a post-mortem examination has been arranged.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are also seeking anyone with camera footage, including dashcam recordings from road users in the New Oak Estate and nearby areas around the time of the incident.”
