X-Men Redefines a Founding Member with a Dark Update of Their Origin Story

Jean Grey, one of the founding members of the X-Men, gets a dark update regarding her origin story and connection to the Phoenix Force. As the X-Men continue to rise “From the Ashes” of Krakoa following the end of that era and the birth of a new one, Jean Grey is experiencing her own revamp as the telepath fully embraces and embodies the Phoenix entity for a God-tier rebirth.

Phoenix #1 – written by Stephanie Phillips, with art by Alessandro Miracolo delves deeper into what the cosmic cycle of death and rebirth means for original X-Men member Jean Grey. The issue depicts how Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force itself recall their first meeting together; interestingly, Jean’s side of the initial encounter shows her viewing it as a mysterious moment, one that redefines the manifestation of her powers as something she had to overcome.

As they try to salvage a planet’s sun despite its people fearing them, the Phoenix and Jean Grey share a monologue in which their thought bubbles are in sync with each other. The two quickly become indistinguishable, highlighting just how synonymous they’ve become with each other since merging. Jean recalls the moment she met the Phoenix as a defining point in her life, though she viewed it initially as the moment her life was saved, rather than realizing how significant the Phoenix would soon become in her life.

The Phoenix then transitions into talking about the other pivotal moment in Jean’s life, long before she met the Phoenix, that changed her life entirely – the death of her childhood friend. The Phoenix echoes that “it was not because of these experience, but in spite of them” that Jean was able to connect with the universe, and eventually, the Phoenix. Considering this is where the story of Phoenix #1 begins, readers should expect the series to expand further on Jean’s origin as it progresses.

The Connection Between Jean Grey & The Phoenix Force Is At The Heart Of Her New Series

As much as this monologue in Phoenix #1 paints Jean Grey’s Phoenix origin story in a new light, it also reinterprets her connection to the cosmic force in a new way. In the Phoenix’s original on-panel debut, Jean is on the brink of death, when the Phoenix literally breaths new life into her. For Jean, and readers who failed to fully understand the Phoenix entity at the time, this was just a second chance at life. However, in the years to come, it would go on to define her character. Now, it is hard to discuss the X-Men founder without discussing the Phoenix, and vice versa.

Phoenix #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
