A seventh Mediterranean episode since February with intense rain and strong wind from Saturday

The surroundings of the Mediterranean are preparing to experience a new very rainy sequence from Saturday. After a few showers this Thursday and Friday, Meteo France we are counting on the gradual onset of continuous rain from Saturday morning in Hérault and the south of the Cévennes massif.

These precipitations, sometimes intense, will spread throughout the Mediterranean but will particularly affect the Cévennes and their surroundings. This phenomenon, called the Cévennes episode, is the local variation of the Mediterranean episode, which can concern this entire region. This is a significant accumulation of rain in a limited area over a short period of time. Since February, it has been the seventh occurrence of this phenomenon. This situation is exceptional since such bad weather generally occurs in the fall.

The peak intensity is expected during the night from Saturday to Sunday. Added to this will be locally strong thunderstorms. The wind will also be violent. It will blow at 80 km/h – 90 km/h in the sector, i.e. a level considered stormy inside the ground.

Uncertainty remains over the exact amount of rain that will fall. It should exceed 100 mm in a few hours, or 100 liters per square meter. For the moment, Meteo France evokes “cumulations which could be significant over a large south-eastern quarter, from Languedoc-Roussillon to the east of the Massif Central, and in particular in the Cévennes”.

The start of next week also promises to be rainy, especially near the Mediterranean. The first trends would also show continued precipitation in the following days.
