The Attorney General of the Union (AGU), Jorge Messias, released a statement in reaction to criticism from the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), regarding the action filed with the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that resulted in the suspension of the law that extends the payroll tax exemption for 17 sectors of the economy and city halls until 2027.

Messias began the note by saying that he has “deep respect for President Rodrigo Pacheco”, who has his “personal admiration”. He then says that the AGU presented technical arguments for the suspension of the law and that its actions are guided “by the highest institutional respect for the Powers of the State and will continue in the right direction of building harmony”.

“Our position was, on a preliminary basis, accepted by Minister Zanin. It is very important to highlight that in the decision, the reporting minister highlighted the importance of institutional dialogue, a position that has our full support”, adds Messias in the note.

Earlier, Pacheco said that the AGU’s action placed the Upper House in antagonism with the Executive and that he will file an appeal against the STF’s decision. “Our position is a position of antagonism, in this case, towards the federal government. To the federal government, to the Federal Attorney General’s Office”, stated the senator.

So far, there are four votes to maintain Minister Cristiano Zanin’s injunction. The decision began to be analyzed in the virtual plenary in the early hours of today. The other ministers will decide whether to overturn or maintain the injunction. If there is no request for review or highlighting, the trial will continue until May 6th.
