United States – Former NBA player Glen “Big Baby” Davis was sentenced by American justice this Thursday to serve 40 months in prison, in addition to three years of supervised release, for his involvement in the system fraud scheme American Basketball League health benefits and benefits.
Davis, who won the NBA champion with the Boston Celtics in 2008, was also ordered to pay US$80,000 in restitution. For the player to serve his sentence on supervised release, he will have to attend a financial management course and receive treatment with mandatory medications.
In addition to Davis, 18 other former players are involved in the scheme that shook the basketball world in 2021. Among them is Terrence Williams, former Detroit Pistons, who was sentenced in 2023, by the American court, to serve ten years in prison for present false medical certificates to receive orthodontic benefits.
Williams was considered the organizer of the million-dollar fraud against the league’s health insurance, embezzling around US$5 million (approximately R$24 million at the time). The case came to light in 2021, when 18 former NBA players were accused of defrauding the American Basketball League’s Health and Wellbeing Plan, totaling US$4 million (R$22 million at the time).
The players arrested in the case are: Terrence Williams, Alan Anderson, Anthony Allen, Desiree Allen, Shannon Brown, William Bynum, Ronald Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Christopher Douglas-Roberts, Melvin Ely, Jamario Moon, Darius Miles, Milton Palacio, Ruben Patterson, Eddie Robinson, Gregory Smith, Sebastian Telfair, Charles Watson Jr., Antoine Wright and Anthony Wroten.
