President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced this Tuesday that the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) will stop receiving subsidies after will reach its break-even point by receiving profits.
In his daily press conference from National Palacethe president highlighted that AIFA is the country’s airport with more cargo movementwhich would have allowed them to have income with profits in a short time.
“Then the eminences, the wise men, say: yes, but that is not a point of equilibrium because when is the investment going to be recovered? Well it’s going to take time. Yes, nothing more than the airport, that investment is there, and it belongs to all Mexicans,” he said.
When asked about whether subsidies will continue to be given to the AIFA, the head of the Executive rejected the continued granting of said aid for airport operations and pointed out that the airport will help transport merchandise for airlines that are saturated.
“It has already started to make profits and the airlines that are in charge of transporting goods are also very happy because the airport was saturated. Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and they didn’t have schedules, they couldn’t land at night in the early morning,” he said.
In this sense, he highlighted that the airport is located in a strategic point which can transport merchandise anywhere in the country.
AIFA earns 77 million pesos in the first quarter of 2024
ANDl Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) reached its breakeven point in the first quarter of 2024 after obtaining more resources compared to the expenses incurred.
The general director of the air port, Isidoro Pastor, predicted the airport’s financial break-even point in 2024, despite the fact that in he Master Development Plan (PMD) estimated to achieve it in March 2027.
“We have projected it (the financial profitability) for when we are two years old; December 2023 or March 2024, when we turn two years old. The PMD had established it for five years, but with the efforts we are making, bringing more passengers and airlines, we are considering achieving it in less than that period,” he said.
According to the financial information of the Santa Lucía airport, obtained by this newspaper, Income from services at the air terminal was 490 million pesos between January and Marchmainly because of the Airport Use Fee (TUA).
While The total expenses generated by the operation of the terminal were 412 million during the first quarter of the year.
