AMLO sends initiative to elect judges by popular vote – El Financiero

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made official his proposal so that the members of the Power of attorney of the Federation (PJF) are elected by popular vote.

During the presentation of his reform package this February 5, the president announced that he will seek to judges, magistrates and ministers are not proposed by the Executive and appointed by the legislators, but rather be elected directly by the people.

“Only the people can save the people”assured López Obrador while giving a preview of the proposal that will be delivered to the Legislative Branch this Monday.

Last year, the federal president proposed that the ministers of the Court be elected by popular vote, as established by the Constitution of 1857: ‘The people are the ones who can purify public life, but First you have to have a qualified majority in Congress”, indicated López Obrador.

The relationship between AMLO and the Judiciary has become increasingly tense, especially with the ministers, who have exercised constitutional control to roll back some presidential reforms.
