Astros vs. Yankees prediction, odds, pick

The Astros make the trip to New York to face the Yankees! These two teams are heading in different directions with the Yankees playing very well and the Astros struggling at times this season. Our MLB odds series has our Astros-Yankees prediction, odds, and pick for Wednesday.

The Astros have opened this season struggling. They have a 12-22 record and have lost two straight games heading into this spot. Despite their early struggles, their offense has been great with a top-three batting average as a team in the league. Jose Altuve, Kyle Tucker, Jeremy Pena, Yainer Diaz, and Yordan Alvarez have been great for Houston behind the plate. The issue is that, so far, they have really struggled on the mound and are only in front of the Rockies, Marlins, White Sox, and Angels in staff ERA near the bottom of the league. Justin Verlander, Ronel Blanco, and Framber Valdez have stood out with Javier currently injured for a lineup that has had its fair share of struggles. The Astros have the talent, and they seem like they are starting to figure things out more on the mound, but they are still struggling to find consistent wins.

The Yankees have come out of the gate extremely hot with a 23-13 record. They are the third-best team in the AL only behind the Orioles and the Guardians. Their bats are just outside the top 10 of the MLB. They are also third in the league in pitching behind only the Red Sox and the Mariners. The Yankees have been night and day different this season compared to last season. Juan Soto is a difference maker they added to go with sluggers Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge, and Anthony Volpe. Nestor Cortes, Marcus Stroman, Clarke Schmidt, and Carlos Rodon have been very good on the mound for New York. The Yankees have been great and get a matchup against the struggling Astros, who have been their arch-nemesis recently.

Why The Astros Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Astros are putting Spencer Arrighetti on the mound where he has a 0-3 record, a 8.27 ERA, and a 1.96 WHIP. Arrighetti has allowed 15 runs on 22 hits with 10 walks and 21 strikeouts through 16.1 innings. In his four appearances for Houston, the Astros are 1-3. In his last start, he pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in a Houston loss. Arrighetti played well in his last time out, but expect some bullpen play from the Astros in this game as well. This will be a tough matchup against the Yankees and their bats.

The offense for the Astros has been a huge bright spot so far this season. They are third in batting average at .259 after they finished last season with a team batting average of the same. Jose Altuve and Kyle Tucker lead the Astros in almost every important batting category. Altuve leads the team in batting average at .343, in OBP at .406 and in total hits at 48. Tucker also leads the way in home runs at nine and then in RBI at 23. At least 10 Astros have hit a minimum of one home run. Two players are tied for second in home runs at seven. This offense has had to carry them this season and that will be no different against the Yankees, who have been great on the mound overall and we will see that again with Carlos Rodon on the mound.

Why The Yankees Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Yankees are going with Carlos Rodon on the mound where he has a 2-2 record, a 3.68 ERA, and a 1.28 WHIP. Rodon has allowed 16 runs on 33 hits with 14 walks and 36 strikeouts. He has appeared in seven games and the Yankees have gone 4-3 in those spots. In his last start, he pitched four innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits with zero walks and six strikeouts in a Yankees loss. This is a tough matchup because the Astros have been very good behind the plate.

The biggest key for the Yankees is their offense, especially after all their struggles last year. They are ranked 12th in the MLB in team batting average at .246 after finishing last season with a .227 batting average. Eleven Yankees have hit at least one home run and four of those Yankees have hit at least five. Juan Soto has been the key, leading the way in most batting categories. He leads the way in batting average at .316, in home runs at eight, in RBI at 28, in OBP at .421, and in total hits at 43. This is a good matchup as well because Arrighetti has struggled at times.

Final Astros-Yankees Prediction & Pick

The Astros have lost two straight, while the Yankees have won four of their last five games and three straight overall. Rodon is the better pitcher than Arrighetti, but the have the better offense. The Yankees are the better team with Rodon on the mound. Expect the Yankees to win and cover late at home in this spot.
