Brazil lost 782 thousand jobs in the job market in the quarter up to March, the first of 2024, compared to the last quarter of 2023. This is a 0.8% drop in employment compared to the previous quarter, reported this Tuesday , 30, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). As a result, the employed population totaled 100.2 million people in the quarter ended in March.

In one year, the increase was 2.4% and 2.37 million more people have found a job since then.

The unemployed population increased by 6.7% (542 thousand more people) in one quarter, totaling 8.6 million unemployed in the quarter up to March. In one year there was a reduction of 8.6% in this group and 808 thousand people have left unemployment since then.

The inactive population or out of the labor force totaled 66.9 million people in the quarter ended in March, 607 thousand more than in the previous moving quarter (+0.9%). Compared to a year ago, IBGE reported, there was a drop of 0.1%.

The employment level – percentage of employed people in the population of working age – stood at 57% in the quarter up to March, 0.6 percentage points below that recorded in the quarter ending in December 2023, and 0.9 percentage points above the level registered a year earlier, in the quarter until March 2023.
