CHICAGO — A Chicago Chiropractor has been found guilty of healthcare fraud in connection with a scheme that prosecutors say netted him around $750,000.
48-year-old Clarence Brown III, who owned and operated Dr. CB3 Wellness and Apex Integrated Medical Center, Ltd., both in the West Loop, was convicted on nine counts of health care fraud on Friday, April 12, following a two-week trial in U.S. District Court in Chicago, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois
Prosecutors say between 2016 and 2020, Brown submitted fraudulent claims to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois for services that he knew weren’t provided to patients. Some of the services were purportedly provided during periods when Brown was not in the state.
According to prosecutors, in order to support his fraudulent claims, Brown then prepared false medical records and other documents.
In total, Brown billed BCBS about $1.3 million for services that were not actually provided to patients and fraudulently obtained about $750,000 from them.
If convicted, Brown could face up to 10 years in federal prison for each count.
Brown is set to appear before U.S. District Judge John Kness for sentencing on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Morris Pasqual announced the condition in a news release on Friday.
