A bill that establishes measures to intensify the fight against slavery-like work in the state was approved by Alerj and went to governor Cláudio Castro for sanction or veto. Authored by deputies Carlos Minc (PSB), Prof. Josemar (PSol), Rosenverg Reis (MDB), and Vinícius Cozzolino (União) the initiative aims to prevent those convicted of work analogous to slavery from participating in tenders, receiving tax incentives, and being appointed to public positions. “I participated in actions that freed workers in this vile condition at a poultry farm in Resende and at a steel farm in Barra Mansa. It is the most degrading and inhumane condition. There can be no contemplation,” said Minc. The expected punishments are the revocation of state licenses, registration on the ICMS taxpayer register, closure of the establishment and the application of fines of around R$43,000 to R$86,000.

Many people think that the Segurança Presente program, which operates in the capital’s neighborhoods and in many cities in the interior, is made up only of military police officers. Is not true. Currently there is already a problem among civil agents and social workers who also work there. They promise a large demonstration on April 29th at Praça Onze where they intend to head towards the Guanabara Palace to protest against their unpaid wages. They also complain that they are working without a contract and that, as a result, they “experience daily uncertainty about the future”.
