Former federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol withdrew on Friday, 3rd, from running for mayor of Curitiba (PR). Hours after he announced that he was no longer a pre-candidate for the municipal Executive, an ally of the former prosecutor of Operation Lava Jato was announced by the government of Paraná as CEO of the Fomento Paraná bank. Lawyer Valdemar Bernardo Jorge joined the Partido Novo in March of this year and was listed as coordinator of Deltan’s pre-campaign and was tipped to be vice-president on the ticket.

Bernardo Jorge was state secretary for Planning and Structuring Projects between 2019 and 2022. Since 2023, he has held the Sustainable Development portfolio. Before joining the Novo Party, he was a leader of the Republicans. The appointment to Fomento Paraná, a state financial institution focused on credit lines for micro to medium-sized entrepreneurs, has not yet been published in the Official State Gazette.

When contacted, the government of Paraná, in a statement, stated that the appointment of the lawyer is related to the former secretary’s “résumé”. “In addition to his curriculum, which qualifies him for the role, he has extensive dialogue with the public and private sectors, especially with agribusiness, an area served by Fomento Paraná”, said the state government. The Partido Novo, Deltan and the former secretary were contacted by Estadão, but did not return.

Less than five months before the elections, the race for mayor of Curitiba remains undefined. The state governor, Ratinho Júnior (PSD), and the mayor of the capital, Rafael Greca (PSD) invest in the pre-candidacy of vice-mayor Eduardo Pimentel (PSD) as successor to the political group.

Scenario in Curitiba remains undefined

According to the latest voting intention polls released before Deltan Dallagnol announced his departure from the race, Pimentel is technically tied with four other pre-candidates. In addition to the former prosecutor, the deputy is competing for the electorate on an even basis against federal deputies Beto Richa (PSDB) and Luciano Ducci (PSB) and state deputy Ney Leprevost (União Brasil).

Deltan was one of the leaders of voting intention surveys even with the decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) in May 2023 that revoked his mandate as federal deputy. The former prosecutor’s departure from the electoral race tends to clarify the scenario of the local dispute and ease the obstacles in Eduardo Pimentel’s pre-campaign.
