Spain – Despite being eliminated by Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, this Tuesday (16), with a 4-2 defeat, Atlético de Madrid sealed its place in the 2025 Club World Cup, inheriting one of the last vacancies from the old continent.

This is because the colchonero club won the dispute against Barcelona, which was also eliminated from the competition, for PSG, in terms of the FIFA ranking. The regulations for the new World Cup format only allow two representatives from the same country — with the exception of a continental title — and Real Madrid took the other spot.

At the end of their Champions League campaign, Atlético had 67 points in the ranking created by FIFA to qualify for the World Cup, while Barça stopped at 61 – to play in the tournament next year, the Catalan club needed to eliminate PSG, but lost at home 4-1.

Of the 12 vacancies for clubs in Europe, 11 have already been filled. Arsenal and RB Salzburg are still fighting, and the English club will only win if they win the 2023/2024 edition of the Champions League.
