The Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban) warns that criminals are taking advantage of the solidarity movement of the Brazilian population in donations to victims of the historic rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul to carry out scams. The main guideline is that, when making a transfer with a Pix key number, the donor checks all payment details very carefully and whether the beneficiary is actually the one who will receive the money. The same guidance is valid for donations made through TED and bank slips.

Another scam situation occurs through false links and social engineering, which uses techniques to trick the individual into providing confidential data, in addition to carrying out financial transactions for the scammer.

“Many criminals are taking advantage of the moment of public commotion to create Pix keys and ask for money for their own account. When donating, check the name of the beneficiary, company or NGO and make sure they are actually running campaigns to help victims. It is also very important that the customer does not click on links received through messaging applications, social networks and sponsored links on search engines”, warns JosĂ© Gomes, director of the Fraud Prevention Committee at Febraban.
