A fire hit Pico do Jaraguá, in the north zone, on Saturday night, 27th, according to the Fire Department. The corporation was called at around 9:30 pm and two vehicles responded to the scene to contain the flames.

Firefighters interviewed by Estadão stated that the outbreaks were small. There were no reports of casualties and work in the area was closed at midnight on Saturday.

Residents recorded images and videos of the flames on social media. In the publications, it was possible to see that the fire was spreading through the forest, located in the Jaraguá State Park. The cause of the fire was not disclosed.

The Jaraguá peak is the highest point in the municipality of São Paulo and rises to an altitude of 1,135 meters. The park is one of the few remaining Atlantic forest natural reserves.

The city of São Paulo is experiencing a heat wave in the middle of autumn, which can facilitate the start of fires. This Saturday, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a danger alert for high temperatures in areas of the states of Mato Grosso, Goiás, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and the entire state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

In these places, the forecast is for temperatures 5ºC above average between April 27th and May 1st. The heat wave is the result of the action of an area of high pressure that produces the so-called “atmospheric blockage”. The barrier prevents cold fronts from arriving in the Midwest, raising temperatures and keeping the air dry and warm.
