The start of Fluminense’s campaign in the 2022 Brasileirão was marked by the departure of coach Abel Braga after the defeat to Coritiba, at Couto Pereira, in the 4th round. Fernando Diniz was hired and debuted in the draw with Palmeiras, at Allianz Parque, in the following round, but Flu dropped three positions and occupied 16th place. The difference to the current campaign is the goal difference.
After five rounds played in 2022, Fluminense had five points and had one less goal difference. Now, Flu has the same score and a negative balance of three goals. Tricolor even has the worst defense in the 2024 Brasileirão, with ten goals conceded (tied with Vasco and Cuiabá). Defensive fragility has been costly, as the team opened the scoring in 4 of the 5 games and only won one.
Since 2005, when the Brasileirão began to be played by 20 clubs in the era of straight points, Fluminense’s performance in 2022 and 2024 only fails to surpass 2008, when it was last placed with just one point after five rounds.
