“Free fall” recorded in Monterrey and San Nicolás – El Financiero

After the perception of insecurity in Monterrey registered a drop of nine percentage points in the last quarter of last year compared to the end of the third quarter, in the first three months of this year it reversed this trend and rose 11.9 points to reach 70.5 percent. percent of the population feeling unsafe living in this city.

Another of the municipalities that reported a negative performance was San Nicolás, where 33.9 percent of the population over 18 years of age said they felt unsafe living there, eight percentage points more or 30.89 percent, than at the end of last year.

Escobedo was another of the municipalities where the perception of insecurity increased, going from 52.3 percent to 55.4 percent, 3.10 percentage points or 9.23 percent more than in December 2023.

The violent events that have occurred in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (AMM), especially those related to intentional homicides, create a perception of insecurity among the population, which is why some municipalities saw an uptick in this variable, said a specialist.

“During the last few weeks, a series of murders have been recorded in the municipalities of the AMM, which have led Nuevo León to be, in a few days, the entity with the highest number of homicides in Mexico, this without a doubt, whether you like it or not, influences in the mood of insecurity of the population,” said the person consulted.

On the positive side, there were four municipalities that improved their perception of insecurity, which were San Pedro, Apodaca, Guadalupe and Santa Catarina.

Guadalupe was the municipality that registered the greatest decrease in this perception, going from 54.2 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, to 49.2 percent, five percentage points or 9.23 percent less between both periods.

Apodaca decreased its perception of insecurity by three points or 6.88 percent between the last two quarters, going from 43.6 percent to 40.6 percent.

San Pedro and Santa Catarina were the municipalities with the lowest improvement in this perception, being 1.4 and 1.2 percentage points, to stand at 27.1 and 54 percent last March, respectively.

The Inegi pointed out that at the national level, in March 2024, 61 percent of the population aged 18 and over, residing in 90 cities of interest, considered it unsafe to live in their city and represents a statistically significant change in relation to the percentages of December 2023 and March 2023 (59.1 and 62.1 percent, respectively).

The cities with the highest percentage of people aged 18 years and older who considered that living in their city is unsafe were: Fresnillo (95.4 percent), Naucalpan, (89.6 percent), Zacatecas (89.3 percent), Chilpancingo (87.3 percent ), Cuernavaca (87 percent) and Ciudad Obregón (86.6 percent).

In contrast, the cities where the perception of insecurity was lower were: Benito Juárez (11.1 percent), Piedras Negras (19 percent), Cuajimalpa de Morelos (22.5 percent), Mérida (23.2 percent), Tampico (23.6 percent percent) and Los Cabos (24.8 percent).
