Here’s how to celebrate your Mom (or mother figure) this weekend

The second weekend of May is swiftly approaching, and we all know what that means — Mother’s Day is right around the corner.

And while some people may have already gotten our Moms gifts for the occasion months ago (looking at you, first-born children), the rest of us are probably still scrambling to figure out what to get as a perfect present.

This year, skip the last-minute ordering from 1-800-flowers and surprise the Mom in your life with something she really wants — whether she prefers spending quality time with her loved ones or is a lady who likes material gifts, there’s something to be found for every type of mama this year in Boulder County.

Though each person is different, the majority of moms probably just want to spend a fun day with their kiddos. And for anyone whose mom likes to get down and groovy, a special Mother’s Day concert at the Dairy Center might just be the ticket.

At 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, Colorado-based music icon Hazel Miller will take the stage at the Gordon Gamm Theater to deliver a one-of-a-kind performance dedicated to all of the mothers out there. Miller is known for her powerhouse vocal prowess and playful, high-energy musical performances that have graced the Colorado music scene for nearly four decades.

Miller will be joined at the Dairy Center by her seven-piece band The Collective, as well as friend and fellow Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductee Chris Daniels.

Daniels, who is a lauded blues, funk, R&B, and soul musician, has been a longtime collaborator of Miller’s ever since the two met in the 1980’s at Blues concert in Boulder.

“She came up and sang with me onstage, and we’ve been writing and recording together ever since, which is a great honor. She is one of the most talented people I have ever met,” Daniels said of Miller. “We have a couple of duets planned for the concert and then will be trading songs back and forth, and it’s just going to be a fun time up there,” he added.

Daniels revealed that he and Miller will be performing “Stealin’ Candy,” a soft, sweet blues tune and the first duet the pair ever sang together, as well as running back some old classics, including “You Got a Friend” by James Taylor, as well as some Aretha Franklin tunes.

“I had a mom, for many many years, and my son’s mother was a wonderful woman who sadly passed away many years ago. When my son was young, I was kind of a Mom and a Dad at the same time — so as someone who has been both, I have a deep love for all of the moms out there,” Daniels said. “I wanted to help make a special day and bring some joy to Dairy Center.”

Tickets for the concert — which range from $25-$40 — also include a dessert buffet, flowers for the mothers, and a complimentary glass of Prosecco.
