House Speaker Mike Johnson says aid vote could come this week

House Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson says he is not resigning, despite growing threats from within his own party to oust him.

In response to Iran’s missile attack against Israel, Johnson now says the House must act to quickly get aid to U.S. allies.

Instead of taking up the Senate’s already passed multi-billion dollar foreign aid package, he’s proposing votes on four bills: one each for Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan and the 4th bill a Republican catch all.

“We’re in unprecedented times, we’re in dangerous times” says Johnson.

Johnson’s most conservative members say they have been betrayed.

Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie says if Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene follows through on her effort to remove the Speaker, he’s all in.

Most House Republicans do not support a motion to vacate.

“The last thing the country needs is to throw a speaker out, even though I disagree with what he’s done, he’s an honest man,” said Ralph Norman (R-S.C.).

Last time conservative lawmakers voted to remove their speaker the House came to a standstill for 22 days.

“I can’t support that,” said Rep Troy Nehls (R-Texas.), “You have to have a solution, so who?”

So far, Democrats are not rushing to Johnson’s rescue.

“It’s up to Speaker Johnson to deliver votes,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar (R-Calif.)

Aguilar said his party is open to any plan that moves quickly and mirrors the Senate’s foreign aid package passed two months ago.

“We stand willing to work with anyone who wants to deliver on that help and support,” said Aguilar.

Johnson hopes to schedule votes on the bills by the end of the week.
