How do donate your unwanted tech, help needy families

CHICAGO — Alliant Credit Union has partnered with the organization PCs for People on a electronic donation drive, giving Chicagoans a way to clear unwanted tech clutter from their homes while helping underserved communities.

The fourth annual event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alliant Credit Union headquarters parking lot, at 11545 W. Touhy Ave.

Volunteers will be on-hand to accept unwanted tech items and reduce e-waste. PCs for People will then securely erase any personal information, refurbish the devices and get them in the hands of people who can use them.

Accepted items include laptops and desktop computers, tablets, TVs and monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, speakers, hard drives computer parts, cords, cables, servers, routers and networking equipment.

Items that cannot be accepted include household appliances like microwaves or vacuum cleaners, car batters, tube TVs and monitors, copiers or anything that contains chemicals or oils, powders, liquids, asbestos or freon.
