The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported this Monday, 6th, that it is considering extending the data collection period for some surveys in Rio Grande do Sul, given the public calamity faced by the State.

According to the institution, this assessment will be carried out by management in the coming days, with a special focus on national research. The IBGE also says that it will soon make public additional measures that are being considered to help the population. In areas affected by flooding, landslides and road closures, IBGE management advised that research collection be suspended until conditions improve and it is possible to safely resume fieldwork.

“For civil servants residing in affected areas, many with water and electricity supply interruptions, the guidance is that they seek to keep themselves and their families safe”, advised the IBGE in a note. For other employees, the recommendation is that, when possible, activities continue under a special remote work regime.

After showing solidarity with the victims of the climate tragedy, IBGE reported that it is working to make its vehicles available to the Rio Grande do Sul government in support of the population. The institute’s agencies in the State have already been instructed to offer city halls data from the 2022 Census that could be useful in estimating the population affected by the damage caused by the rains.
