The State Department of USA denounced in its Annual Human Rights Report that Mexico left the majority of criminal cases without investigating or prosecuting as homicidestorture, kidnappingshuman trafficking and extortion.
In addition, the US agency highlighted that the level of violence in the country remained high.
In its report, the department noted that among the country’s main humanitarian problems are homicides, torture, arbitrary detentions, drug trafficking, gender violence and against the LGTBIQ+ community, among others.
From the beginning, the agency warns that “There were no significant changes in the human rights situation in Mexico during 2023.”
Furthermore, he specified that, in many parts of the country, organizations dedicated to human trafficking continue to act in collusion with local authorities.
When this same report was published last year, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador He maintained that what was done by the “little department of the State Department is a mess.”
Furthermore, he accused the agency that “it does not change, It is an old, anachronistic policy of wanting to get involved in the public life of other countries. With what law? “It is a flagrant violation of international law.”
Now, US authorities stressed that some of the problems they detected last year remained, and they added some new ones.
A point that must be highlighted is the alert issued by the State Department regarding the increase in attacks against the judiciary.
After last year they increased the President’s comments against the Judiciary, after the arrival of Norma Piña to the presidency of the Court, the US agency took note of these acts.
“President López Obrador and other government actors verbally attacked the Judiciary, especially the Supreme Court, criticizing the judges who ruled against the administration on numerous occasions,” he noted.
In this sense, The agency showed that these claims permeated to the citizensand resumed the events that occurred a year ago in a protest against the Supreme Court.
“In March (2023)during a large demonstration in Mexico City, government supporters they burned an effigy of the president of the Court, Norma Piñaaccusing her of corruption,” he explained.
On the other hand, the US authorities They warned about the serious restrictions that exist in the country regarding freedom of expressionespecially because of the violence that exists in Mexico against journalists.
In this sense, he stressed that “the official discrediting of press workers continued. Politicians, including President López Obrador, publicly discredited and criticized said journalists, presenting them as biased, partisan and corrupt.”
At this same point, resumed what was published in 2022 by the organization Article 19, which recorded at least 176 derogatory comments from the Office of the President aimed at media, journalists and civil society organizations.
Finally, it concluded that “independent media were active and expressed a wide variety of opinions without restrictions.”
