Impunity prevails in Mexico against murders, trafficking and torture, accuses the US – El Financiero

The State Department of USA denounced in its Annual Human Rights Report that Mexico left the majority of criminal cases without investigating or prosecuting as homicidestorture, kidnappingshuman trafficking and extortion.

In addition, the US agency highlighted that the level of violence in the country remained high.

In its report, the department noted that among the country’s main humanitarian problems are homicides, torture, arbitrary detentions, drug trafficking, gender violence and against the LGTBIQ+ community, among others.

From the beginning, the agency warns that “There were no significant changes in the human rights situation in Mexico during 2023.”

Furthermore, he specified that, in many parts of the country, organizations dedicated to human trafficking continue to act in collusion with local authorities.

Now, US authorities stressed that some of the problems they detected last year remained, and they added some new ones.

A point that must be highlighted is the alert issued by the State Department regarding the increase in attacks against the judiciary.

“President López Obrador and other government actors verbally attacked the Judiciary, especially the Supreme Court, criticizing the judges who ruled against the administration on numerous occasions,” he noted.

At this same point, resumed what was published in 2022 by the organization Article 19, which recorded at least 176 derogatory comments from the Office of the President aimed at media, journalists and civil society organizations.

Finally, it concluded that “independent media were active and expressed a wide variety of opinions without restrictions.”
