In Mexico human rights are violated every day, accuses Amnesty International – El Financiero

We are experiencing very strong setbacks in terms of human rights in Mexicohe claimed Edith Olivares Ferretoexecutive director of Amnesty International in Mexico.

During the presentation of the Annual Report 2023-2024 On the human rights situation in Mexico, Olivares claimed that There are crimes that continue to occur due to lack of action by the government to avoid them.

“Despite the advances in legislation, in institutions that are created to address these human rights violations, femicides do not stop, disappearances do not stop because The State does not have a public prevention policy”, he claimed.

Furthermore, he noted that “We have institutions that are like empty shells.and as long as we continue to have that in the human rights commissions, in the protection mechanism, in the Ministry of the Interior, in women’s institutes, We are going to continue being like this, denouncing violations”.

On the other hand, Olivares regretted that President López Obrador has maintained a closed attitude towards organizationsand he said that he is one of the few presidents in America who has not received AI so far in his term.

This pattern is repeated with other entities, since, according to the executive director, in recent years The authorities’ resistance to listening to civil society has increased. “What we have seen is that in recent years the authorities’ resistance to attending to and listening to civil society organizations is increasing,” he noted.

He added that “searching women in Mexico They are demanding, they are almost begging the Presidency to attend to themand they are not attended to.”

Olivares also stated that There is concern in AI about the Amnesty Law, since it can be misused, which is why he asked for regulations that establish how it will be applied.

Before, Olivares Ferreto claimed that human rights violations persist in the countrysince these occur every day.

“In Mexico human rights are violated every day: every day is missing people; Women searching for their relatives are attacked and threatened; around 10 women are murdered daily; the families of the victims of feminicide they experience institutional violence daily; journalists and human rights defenders are attacked and threatened (sic) for their work”, he stated.

Likewise, he maintained that Mexico continues to be the most dangerous country for journalists in the Western Hemisphere, due to at least five murders that were recorded last year.

Furthermore, the director regretted that these risks are increased from the highest tribune of the country every day. “Inequality, corruption and impunity continue to prevail in the countryand as if all this were not enough, our daily bread (of President López Obrador) is attacks on civil society organizations, journalists, or any collective organization that minimally dissents from government decisions.”

For this reason, he pointed out that for this year, Mexico has to pay special attention to government actions that put people’s guarantees at risk.

“This 2024 comes with enormous challenges in terms of human rights for our country, Thousands of people continue to be victims of violence by the State and criminal groups“People who practice journalism and defend human rights face great risks, attacks and threats,” he indicated.
