Iran condemned, this Monday (29), the police interventions on university campuses in the United Stateswhere a student movement in support of the Palestinians and against the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip emerged in recent days.

Tehran “absolutely does not accept the violent behavior of the police and army to put an end to the university environment and the demands of students,” declared Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani.

“The American government practically ignored its obligations in terms of human rights and respect for the democratic principles it professes,” he added.

Started at Columbia University in New York, the student movement spread to other campuses across the country, from California to Massachusetts, passing through southern states.

Over the weekend, 100 people were arrested at a Boston university, 80 at a Missouri campus, 72 in Arizona and 23 in Indiana.

Students criticize the United States’ military support for its Israeli ally and demand that their university cut ties with companies related to Israel.

“What we have seen in American universities in recent days is the awakening of the global community and global public opinion on the Palestinian issue,” Kanani said.

“The strong voices of protesters against crime and genocide cannot be silenced by police action and violent policies,” he added.

In Iran, hundreds of people protested on Sunday in Tehran and other major cities in solidarity with protests in the United States.
