Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will visit France, Brazil and Paraguay next week, as part of a strategy to boost ties with Latin America, the Tokyo government announced.

During the six-day trip, Kishida will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“This is the year of Latin America, which is the center of the world’s attention,” said Japanese government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi at a press conference in which he highlighted that Brazil presides over the G20 and Peru is with the presidency of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC).

“Japan wants to take advantage of the opportunity to strengthen ties with Latin American countries,” he added.

At the meeting with Lula, Kishida is expected to sign a bilateral cooperation agreement on several environmental issues, including climate change and the process of reducing carbon emissions, reported the Japanese agency Kyodo News.

Kishida will travel with representatives from at least 40 companies, with the aim of increasing Japan’s investments in Brazil and encouraging cooperation in green technologies, the Nikkei newspaper said.

Japanese automaker Toyota announced in March a plan to invest 11 billion reais and increase the production of hybrid vehicles in Brazil.
