WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene triggered a motion to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson Wednesday night, but it failed with both Republicans and Democrats voting to save him and they say, avoid chaos in the House.
After more than a month of threatening to force a vote to oust Speaker Johnson Greene finally made the move.
“Speaker Johnson relied on Democrat votes on at least two occasions,” Greene said.
Greene says Johnson’s passage of government funding and Ukraine aid with the backing of Democrats is the reason to remove him.
“Excuses like “this is just how you have to govern in divided government” are pathetic, weak, and unacceptable,” said Greene.
Greene’s motion was quickly killed.
The House voted 359 to 43 to table her efforts letting Johnson keep the gavel another day.
Johnson says he appreciates his colleagues’ support.
“The country desperately needs a functioning Congress,” said Johnson.
Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries says that’s why Democrats stepped in to save the Republican speaker.
“We need to move forward as a Congress to solve problems for everyday Americans,” said Jeffries.
Greene said she has no regrets.
“I’m proud of what I did today,” she said.
Johnson said he hopes this is the end of personality politics in congress and he wants the House to get past this.
