Joliet mother charged after 12-year-old daughter dies in fentanyl, heroin overdose

JOLIET, Ill. — A mother was charged after her 12-year-old daughter overdosed and died on fentanyl and heroin Sunday in Joliet.

Just after 8:25 a.m., officers responded to a home in the 1500 block of East Washington Street on the report of an unresponsive juvenile. A 12-year-old girl was found on the second floor of the home unresponsive.

CPR and Narcan was used and the girl was transported to Silver Cross Hospital. She died Wednesday at Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Following a preliminary investigation, officers believe the girl ingested an unknown amount of fentanyl and heroin.

Officers learned that the girl’s mother, Collette Bancroft, 35, of Joliet, shared a bedroom with her daughter. Officers allegedly found heroin and fentanyl in Bancroft’s purse.

Bancroft has been charged with possession of a controlled substance.

WGN News asked if the overdose was accidental and police said detectives are still looking into the circumstances at this time. The case is ongoing.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services were notified, police said.
