Rio – The Labor Day holiday, this Wednesday (1st), ended with more than 30 buses broken down after vandalism outside the beaches of the South Zone of Rio. Among the main lines affected are 474 – Jacaré x Copacabana (Via Túnel Santa Bárbara); 476 – Méier x Leblon (Via Túnel Rebouças); 457 – Abolition x Copacabana (Via Túnel Santa Bárbara); 483 – Penha x General Osório (Express route); and 485 – Penha x General Osório (Via Linha Vermelha/Santa Bárbara Tunnel).

In more images, buses appear with broken windows and doors, as well as ripped-out seats.

According to Rio Ônibus, the action caused an average loss of R$200,000. “An inestimable damage to the city’s urban mobility. The company asks the population and public security authorities to help conserve public property that transports 2.1 million passengers daily,” he said in a statement.

When contacted, the Military Police did not confirm any action for cases of vandalism on buses on Wednesday (2), but reported that within the scope of Operation Praia, in times of higher temperatures, the military acts by carrying out overt policing, approaches and escorts of buses that leave the capital’s waterfront to the Central and North Zone regions of the city of Rio, which includes the bus route leaving the beaches.

Also according to the corporation, in these actions, buses that circulate in overcrowded conditions are intercepted by teams from operational units, passengers are instructed to disembark and are boarded in other vehicles, with the assistance of military police officers who are involved in the action.
