There was a lack of work for 20.7 million people in Brazil in the quarter ending in March, of which 8.6 million were without any work, according to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad ContÃnua), from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The composite labor force underutilization rate went from 17.3% in the quarter from October to December 2023 to 17.9% in the quarter to March. This indicator includes the unemployment rate, the underemployment rate due to insufficient hours and the potential workforce rate, that is, relative to people who are not looking for a job, but who would be available to work. In the quarter to March 2023, the workforce underutilization rate was 18.9%.
Also according to IBGE, the underutilized population (20.7 million) grew 3.9% compared to the fourth quarter of 2023. In relation to the quarter until March 2023, this indicator saw a decline of 4%. At that time, a year earlier, there were 21.57 million people in this situation.
