Laredo, Texas creates strategy for contingencies due to the collapse of the customs system – El Financiero

Laredo, Texas.- The frequent failures in the Mexican customs system managed by ANAM -National Customs Agency of Mexico- have caused multiple delays in the clearance of goods for both import and exportand furthermore, the long lines in busy areas of Laredo, Texas, could cause traffic accidents, which is why local officials met with federal Mexican authorities to create an action plan.

On Saturday, April 20, the Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena visited the city of Laredo on his work tour across the border, where held a meeting with the mayor of said Texas town, Dr. Victor Treviñoas well as other local authorities to deal with various border issues, among which the operation of customs systems by ANAM stands out.

Dr. Treviño and others local representatives requested through Mrs. chancellor to the federal government to work on improving customs systemssince during the last week it has presented constant falls and failures that delay binational trade between Mexico and the US.

“We have just identified the problems, what has to be done so that they take it there to Mexico and implement it. Obviously the computer system has to be improved and updated, that’s number one number. Two, they have to also make contingency plans When there is a traffic jam, act on both sides of the border to improve the traffic jam and avoid, public risk problems“explained the mayor.

The contingency plan is that now, The mayor has the authority to declare a “state of emergency” when there is a breakdown of the customs system, which in turn, will deploy city authorities such as police officers to better organize traffic which is formed by cargo trucks trying to cross into Mexico. All this, in order to avoid traffic jams, and thus prevent road accidents.

It is expected thatand this same plan and demands made by Laredo, Texas, is replicated in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas with whom they share the border crossing, where, among others, is the World Trade Bridge, the most important for both Mexico and the United States, due to its capacity, location and infrastructure.

In addition, during the next few weeks they will meet again with federal authorities in Mexico, and state authorities in Tamaulipas, in Ciudad Victoria, to follow up on the constant declines in the customs system that generate a strong economic blow to both nations.
