“It was a very difficult game. Fortaleza is a very good and well-trained team. It’s difficult to play here (at Castelão), the pitch wasn’t the best. But we defended ourselves very well, we did what the game asked us to do. We had the idea to propose more, but we know that football is not like that, we had to adapt according to the match, but we did very well and now we will decide at home”, he said.
Vasco suffered at Castelão. Fortaleza got scared — especially in the first half — when they hit the post with Pochettino. In the final stage, Cruz-Maltino managed to have more of the ball, but ended the game with less than 40% possession. Leão do Pici, in turn, shot 16 times, six of which were on target, but did not turn their dominance into goals.
With the goalless draw, Vasco left the dispute open for the return game, in São Januário, on the 21st, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), and will play for any victory to advance to the round of 16. In the event of a new tie, the place will be decided on penalties.
After winning the Copa do Brasil, Vasco shifts its focus to the Brasileirão. Cruz-Maltino returns to the field next Sunday (5), at 4pm, against Athletico-PR, at Ligga Arena, for the 5th round of the championship.
