Niterói – The modern routine requires women to undertake a true triple shift, balancing work, domestic care and managing their own well-being. In this challenging context, visual artists Leticia Gomes and Diana Gondim present a reflection on taking care of others, but also taking care of oneself, in the exhibition “Patronagens of Care” — which will be on display at Espaço Cultural Correios, in Niterói, on May 11th, running until June 22nd.

Curated by Claudia Monteiro, the exhibition invites the public to explore the points of intersection between the artists’ duo’s distinct works. Time jugglers, both create art amidst the many daily demands of family and professional life. “We saw that our works, despite being very different, speak to each other in this aspect of care”, says Letícia, who met Diana through a group called Research in Contemporary Art (PAC).

Letícia uses waste and leftover household objects to create three-dimensional works and installations that integrate into the spaces of her home. “My studio is my entire home. In my work, I use my perspective as a woman, a mother at home and, therefore, invisible to society, to shape and give new meaning to common objects discarded on a daily basis. By reformulating them in my practice as an artist, I also reformulate myself and, luckily, those around me”, explains the artist. On the other hand, Diana finds inspiration in her children to portray the ambiguities of the domestic environment and the challenges inherent to motherhood. “Passage of time, human relationships, contradictory emotions, bodies, cycles, rituals and their relationships with the sacred, dialogue with my interests and are decoded visually in my work. I bring my everyday life to painting, whether the routine is chaotic or those moments of pause and admiration for life, and I print my experiences as a woman and mother without the idealized romanticism”, explains the painter.

According to the curator, Claudia Monteiro, the differences between the artists’ works highlight their common points, highlighting “an inclination towards repetition, a certain ordering of environments and memories, and the vulnerability of the subtle fabric of the domestic”. The exhibition is a testimony of imagination overcoming adversity, where creativity flourishes even in the midst of the tribulations of daily routine. “Patterns of Care” offers not only an opportunity to appreciate art, but also to reflect on the complexities of contemporary life, especially for women who live. play multiple roles.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Diana Gondim – https://dianagondim.com/

Visual artist born in Campos dos Goytacazes, moved to Rio de Janeiro in 2002 to study Visual Communication at PUC-Rio. She studied creative processes, fashion, printing, illustration, videography, photography and arts. From 2014 onwards, she began researching watercolor, which marks her investigations into colors and textures of nature to talk about memory and affection. In 2020, her research focused on the issues faced by motherhood with twins, such as the passage of time, contradictory emotions and the feminine. Her paintings deal with visual and sensorial accumulations caused by the experience of being a woman and mother in a structurally patriarchal society. Currently, in addition to working daily in her home studio, Diana participates in study groups with other artists.

Leticia Gomes – https://mynameisleticia.com/

Leticia is from Rio, graduated in Visual Communication from PUC-Rio. Since 2002 she has divided her life between Rio de Janeiro and Chicago. For many years she worked as a corporate graphic designer, always simultaneously maintaining artistic research. In a variety of experiences, Leticia has worked with groups of local artists, held residencies and participated in exhibitions in Chicago, USA. An interdisciplinary artist, Leticia chose discarded everyday objects, abundant and without perceived value or visibility, as the starting point of her research. During collection, the first stage of work, these scraps become connected to her consciousness, her memories and her family, given that her studio is at home. Her perspective as an immigrant, woman, mother, all marked by invisibility, is the starting point for the narratives of revaluation and historical decentralization that her works propose. The recycling of the languages themselves would be the second stage of the research, where Leticia declines montages, photographs and videos, decanting new expressions and meanings both for herself and for the objects. A past reframed for the future, with a vivid awareness of the present.
