The presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro, discussed this Wednesday, the 17th, a proposal from Colombian diplomacy to hold a plebiscite to guarantee the integrity and safety of those who are defeated in the Venezuelan elections. Petro presented Lula with his proposal for dialogue for what he has been calling “political and democratic peace”, after speaking with Nicolás Maduro and some members of the opposition to Chavismo, during a visit to Caracas, at the beginning of the week.
“We are talking about Venezuela and we want to convey to President Lula a proposal that was discussed with President Maduro and the opposition. We are considering the option of a plebiscite in the next elections to guarantee a democratic pact. This pact should guarantee any loser the certainty and security in relation to their path, their rights and their political guarantees, which everyone must have in their country”, stated Petro. The Brazilian only confirmed that he and Petro talked about Venezuela and Haiti. “If it depends on Colombia and Brazil, this continent will be a zone of peace,” said Lula.
