Lula meets with ministers to discuss recovery actions for RS | Brazil

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, had a meeting, this Monday morning (6), with ministers to discuss the federal government’s actions for the recovery of Rio Grande do Sul. The management plans to announce aid to the State after the end of the discussion. The head of the Executive visited the region this Sunday (5) and promised “everything within the reach of the federal government so that we can meet the basic needs of the people who are isolated due to the rain”.

The meeting took place outside the agenda of the Presidency of the Republic and brought together, among other authorities, the ministers of Finance, Fernando Haddad, the Civil House, Rui Costa, Planning, Simone Tebet, Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, and the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias. Earlier, Rui Costa had met with representatives from Finance, Planning, SRI and AGU to discuss the issue.

Initially, Lula was expected to participate in an event to sign agreements between Itaipu Binacional, the government of Pará and the city of Belém for the city to host the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP 30, in 2025. However, the The president’s presence was canceled to deal with the situation in Rio Grande do Sul.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Lula said that this Monday’s meeting with ministers dealt with “recovery actions for Rio Grande do Sul, as well as what needs to be done to rebuild the State when possible, with all people rescued and when the water is receding”.

“We are also with ministers Paulo Pimenta and Waldez Góes, who are still in Rio Grande do Sul, and all the work of the Armed Forces in rescuing thousands of people in this emergency in Rio Grande do Sul”, wrote the head of the Executive.

The rains hitting the state are causing stoppages in water, energy and telephone services, as well as damage to highways and changes in traffic, according to information compiled by the state government in a bulletin at 6pm this Sunday (5).

According to the record, 854,486 people are without water supply, according to Corsan. The amount is equivalent to 27% of the total addresses served by the concessionaire.

Visits to the region

Furthermore, Lula guaranteed funding for the reconstruction of roads in the state and promised to reduce bureaucracy for the works.

Rain data

A tragedy that hits Rio Grande do Sul already has 83 confirmed deaths and four under investigation this Monday (6). According to the new report released by Civil Defense, the number of injured also rose to 291, and at least 111 people were missing.

The data also shows that more than 129 thousand are homeless and more than 20 thousand are in public shelters. In total, at least 364 cities were affected and more than 870,000 people suffered from the floods.
