Volta Redonda – Maestro Nicolau de Oliveira, creator of the “Volta Redonda, Cidade da Música” project, will conduct on Tuesday night (30), at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), a part of the concert by the Symphonic Band of the Southern University of Mississippi (USM), from the United States of America, in the city of Hattierburg.

During the concert, maestro Nicolau will conduct American marches, as well as classical composers. The general public can follow the concert through the University of Mississippi’s social network at: www.facebook.com/USMSchoolofMusic

The invitation

Conductor Nicolau Martins de Oliveira was invited by USM to visit the USM facilities in celebration of his 50 year career. In addition to the concert, the maestro gave a series of musical education lectures throughout the week to music school students.

The maestro highlighted that he was very well received by teachers, students and also by the administrative side of USM. The Southern University of Mississippi even offers musical educational exchanges to participants (students and teachers) of the “Volta Redonda, Cidade da Música” project.

During the week, the maestro conducted a rehearsal and also met with the university director, Collin Mckenzie, as well as double bassist Daniel Magalhães – a former student of the Volta Redonda project –, who is currently on an exchange program at USM.

Conductor Sarah Higino, one of the coordinators of Volta Redonda, Cidade da Música, highlights the event as a unique moment in the history of music in the municipality.

“Being able to conduct the musicians of this university in their homeland, for an audience that is not ours, and with this repertoire, is a great challenge, and at the same time an honor and an opportunity for exchange that will have repercussions among our students,” he said. .

Project

“Volta Redonda Cidade da Música”, started in 1974 and maintained by the city hall, is a project developed by its creator, professor Nicolau Martins de Oliveira, with students from the teaching units of the Municipal Department of Education (SME) and the Educational Foundation from Volta Redonda (Fevre). Each school has a music room to start the participating student, who then goes to the project headquarters, in the Vila Mury neighborhood.
