May 1 (UPI) — A 36-year-old man has been charged with murder in Tuesday’s stabbing death of 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, after the suspect allegedly attacked five people with a sword on a suburban street in east London.
Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, a Spanish-Brazilian dual national, was charged Wednesday.
“The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized the Metropolitan police to charge Marcus Arduini Monzo with the murder of 14 year-old Daniel Anjorin, who was fatally stabbed in Hainault on Tuesday,” said Jaswant Narwal, chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North.
“Our thoughts remain firmly with the family of Daniel and all those who have been impacted by this horrific incident.”
Monzo is also accused of seriously injuring four others, including two police officers who remain hospitalized. He faces two counts of attempted murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article, according to court documents.
Police said they were called Tuesday morning after a vehicle was reported to have crashed in Hainault, east London. Witnesses said a man got out of the car and started stabbing people.
Video of Tuesday’s attack showed the man carrying a long-bladed weapon that looked like a sword. Police used a stun gun to subdue him. He was arrested 22 minutes after the initial call.
“We are not looking for more suspects and this incident does not appear to be terror-related,” Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell said Tuesday.
Five people were taken to the hospital, including Anjorin who died shortly after arriving.
On Wednesday, Anjorin’s school called him a “true scholar” and a “core member” of the community.
“All we can do for now is to look after one another and respect the privacy of Daniel’s family — it is a time of profound grief and as a community we will endure best if we come together in kindness and compassion,” Bancroft’s head teacher Simon Marshall wrote in a letter to parents.
Monzo will appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, as investigators urged witnesses to continue to come forward.
“We are starting to build a picture of what happened on Tuesday and I want to thank everyone who has come forward to share dashcam, doorbell and mobile phone footage with us,” said Detective Chief Inspector Larry Smith of Metropolitan Police. “Anyone who has not yet spoken to police and has any information should contact us as soon as possible.”
“This is an incredibly tragic incident that has resulted in a young boy losing his life and his family devastated,” Smith added, urging “patience as officers carry out a painstaking investigation to deliver justice for Daniel, his family and those injured.”
