Michigan football’s Donovan Edwards weighs in on Alex Orji-led QB1 battle

The Michigan football team hasn’t had to worry about quarterback play for the past couple years because of JJ McCarthy. McCarthy lost just one game as a starter for the Wolverines, and he helped lead the team to a national championship last season. Now, McCarthy is gone. He was picked by the Minnesota Vikings with the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft, and Michigan now needs a new QB. Most people are expecting it to be Alex Orji, but this competition will go long into the offseason.

We got our first good look at the QB competition a couple weeks ago when the Michigan football team had their spring game. Alex Orji, Jayden Denegal, Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren seem to be the four players fighting for the position. True freshman Jadyn Davis isn’t quite ready.

From what we saw in the spring game, Orji and Warren looked like the top two QBs, and most projections currently have Orji winning the battle.

Starting running back Donovan Edwards has obviously seen the battle take place all spring, and he isn’t too worried about who will end up winning the job. He knows that the best player will be rewarded, and he knows that each one of those QBs wants the best for the team.

“It’s the same thing as it was going into 2022, right, with Cade [McNamara] and JJ [McCarthy],” Donovan Edwards said to the media after the spring game. “I mean whoever it is, they’re going to be the man for the job. There’s not going to be any animosity in whoever wins the job or who will be backup, doesn’t matter. Everyone is going to prepare like they’re quarterback one, running back one, receiver one, doesn’t matter, everybody is gonna prepare like they’re gonna be the person when their name is called on. We’re in a great spot with that.”

Alex Orji is the player that we have seen play the most for the Michigan football team. He didn’t throw it last year, but the Wolverines brought him in for a fair amount of runs, and he was incredibly hard to stop. He is often regarded as the most athletic player that the Wolverines have. Edwards is confident that Orji will be successful.

“He’s shown it already,” Edwards said in regards to Orji’s skill. “He’s just gonna have to continue to do what he’s doing, continue to emerge as a leader and the great teammate that he already is. There’s nothing in my mind that Alex Orji will not be successful, he will be successful.”

We’ll see who ends up winning the job, but if Orji can sharpen his passing skills this offseason, he is going to be a scary sight for opposing defenses next year.
