Psychoanalyst and Family Court expert Renata Bento highlights that the separation process is always painful for the child and the refusal to live with one of the parents can have several causes that deserve to be investigated. “It’s very hard for a child to participate in disagreements about the most important emotionally based figures in their life, which are their parents”, she points out.
The case reported by the mother corresponds to a child with very specific language for such a young age, which already demonstrates some suffering on the part of this child. The expert emphasizes that it is not clear whether the child experiences a conflict of loyalty with his mother and does not want to see his father. Or if this parent practices parental alienation.
In any case, this child is already experiencing a great conflict, as they are in the middle of a relationship that is not theirs, but their parents’. A child who grows up being the object of dispute and having to emotionally choose their caregiver may present a series of emotional difficulties in the present that will be carried over into adult life relationships. “If this situation persists, I suggest looking for a psychologist to listen to this child’s conflict and a lawyer, specialist in Family Law, to report what has been happening in this case”, advises Renata Bento.
